Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma on Thursday called the blast outside the party’s headquarters here an unfortunate incident, blaming forces, inimical to peace and brotherhood in the state, for this cowardly act.Sharma also lashed out at Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the law and order situation in Punjab and linked this blast incident to a series of grenade attacks outside police stations and other incidents.The explosion occurred around 5 pm on Wednesday when a suspected crude explosive device was hurled near the office, officials said. No casualties were reported, but the incident triggered panic in the area.Addressing mediapersons here, Sharma referred to an unverified video that surfaced on social media on Wednesday evening showing a man purportedly pulling the pin from a blue-coloured grenade and throwing it, while another person records the act.Sharma said in the video that the unidentified man purportedly wanted to throw the hand grenade inside the BJP office building, while another man was seen abusing him for missing the target as it fell outside.Earlier in the day, he visited the site of the blast outside the party’s headquarters here and said that he was relieved over the fact that there were no casualties in the incident.“There are many workers in this office. Senior party leaders also stay here as there is a residential area here as well,” he added.The motive behind the incident will be ascertained after authorities complete the investigation, Sharma, who is also the Pathankot MLA, said.He further said Punjab Police officials, along with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, have been deployed at the BJP office here.The Punjab BJP president added that his party always wants peace and mutual brotherhood in the state.“I feel that BJP’s increasing strength and acceptability of the party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi among every section of the society was not being digested by many people, especially the current government,” he alleged.Sharma also referred to Modi’s visit to Dera Sachkhand Ballan in Jalandhar in February, Home Minister Amit Shah’s rally in Moga in March, and several people, including senior advocate and former MLA HS Phoolka, joining the party.“I feel that such forces which want to break Punjab, those forces which are against brotherhood in the state, did the cowardly act outside the BJP office yesterday,” he said.The Punjab BJP leader also listed several incidents, such as a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) attack on police intelligence headquarters, many grenade blasts outside police stations, a blast at the residence of BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia, singer Sidhu Moosewala murder, statue of BR Ambedkar being vandalised and other incidents to emphasise the “deteriorating” law and order situation in the state.
