More than a fortnight after Manipur BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte died in a Gurugram hospital due to injuries sustained during ethnic clashes, his body is still lying in the mortuary of Churachandpur Medical College, as his family has demanded a probe by a central agency into his death and strict punishment for perpetrators.Valte had sustained grievous injuries on May 4, a day after ethnic violence erupted in Manipur, after he was attacked by a mob. He was incapacitated due to the nature of his injuries and was admitted to a private hospital in Gurugram, where he died on February 21. Subsequently, his body was taken to Churachandpur Medical College, where it has been kept since then.In a statement on March 8, the local BJP unit of the Thanlon Assembly constituency, which Valte represented, called for a peaceful sit-in outside the Churachandpur Medical College on March 9. The party has also requested locals to participate in large numbers to express their love for him.The party has alleged that Valte had sustained injuries after he was attacked in Imphal by members of the radical armed militia group, Arambai Tenggol.Speaking to The Tribune, Valte’s son Gousam Valte said the family has demanded a probe by the NIA or the CBI into the circumstances leading to his father’s death. Gousam said they would not take Valte’s body for final rites till their demand for central probe was fulfilled. The Zomi Coordination Committee (ZCC), which was formed on February 25 to deal with all the matters related to Valte’s death and its aftermath, has been deliberating with the BJP-led state government, seeking justice and probe into his death. On March 2, newly appointed Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho had visited Lamka in Churachandpur and met the family of the departed MLA.The same day, the ZCC had said that an assurance was given by the Deputy Chief Minister during a closed door meeting that those responsible for the May 4 assault would be investigated and brought to justice. However, sources aware of developments said that only verbal assurances have been given and no concrete follow-up has taken place till date. The ZCC, on its part, said that future course of action would depend on the response of the state government to the demand for a probe by a central agency.
