In a remark critical of the AAP government, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Saturday said criminals no more feared law, with incidents involving gangsters taking place on a daily basis.Speaking to reporters here, he said gangsters were willing to go any extent to take revenge from rivals and operating fearlessly. The Governor’s statement came a day after a ruling AAP leader was shot dead by two assailants outside a gurdwara in Amritsar, prompting the Opposition to slam ruling AAP over a spate of recent killings in the state.“Criminals in Punjab do not have the fear of law that they should,” Kataria told mediapersons after attending a passing-out parade of women constables at the Border Security Force (BSF) Subsidiary Training Centre at Kharkan Camp here.Commenting on the government’s statewide anti-drug campaign, the Governor said efforts must not remain restricted to a few individuals, instead the drive should be converted into a mass movement.Kataria said he had earlier undertaken a foot march against the drug menace and would again carry out a four-day padyatra in three border districts.‘Serious efforts on to end cross-border smuggling’He said it was difficult to predict when the efforts would yield results but sustained and sincere attempts were essential and his foot march was a step in the direction. Speaking on cross-border smuggling through drones, the Governor said serious steps were being taken to curb the trafficking of weapons and drugs from Pakistan. He stated that in the first phase, 10 anti-drone systems were installed along the Pakistan border in Punjab, and following his request, the Centre deployed 23 additional anti-drone systems along the fence. The Governor added that the Punjab Government had also extended support by providing Rs 10 crore for it.Kataria said the entire 563-kilometre-long international border in Punjab should be covered with anti-drone systems.Earlier, Kataria he reviewed the parade as the chief guest. On the occasion, 447 women who completed their training were inducted as constables into the BSF.Congratulating the passing-out women constables, Kataria said their enthusiasm and dedication proved that the nation was in safe hands. The Governor urged them to serve the country with complete devotion, integrity and commitment.
