GNDU alumnus Jaspreet Singh seeks recognition for Punjabi language in New York

Jaspreet Singh, Attorney-at-Law (USA), and a distinguished alumnus of the Guru Nanak Dev Univeristy, Amritsar, has taken lead in seeking an official recognition for Punjabi language in the state of New York.Singh led a delegation of Sikh leaders from New York to meet Governor Kathy Hochul, and submitted a memorandum for giving an official status to the language, so that it could be taught in schools and colleges.The meeting was held on February 17, at the Governor’s Office in Manhattan, New York, and was attended by several senior officials representing key departments, including the State Police, Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), Department of Education, and Interfaith Affairs. Sibu Nair, Director of Asian American Affairs, was also present.The memorandum, which was submitted on behalf of the Gurdwara Sikh Cultural Society of New York included the following points:Official recognition of the Punjabi language in New York State, with provisions for its teaching in schools, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and colleges.Support for the creation of a community centre at the Gurdwara Sikh Cultural Society of New York.Stronger measures for the prevention of hate crimes against Sikhs and Punjabis.Assistance in establishing a funeral home to serve community needs.Attention to the challenges faced by immigrant populations in the State.Singh also highlighted issues concerning immigrant communities, including legal challenges faced by detainees and the use of Habeas Corpus petitions for securing relief.Singh further conveyed that the Governor’s response was constructive and a follow-up meeting has been scheduled in May.Kathy Hochul was also invited by the members to attend the Sikh Day Parade, to be held in Manhattan, on 25 April 2026.
