Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Wednesday said the technology giant is working closely with India to “infuse AI at all levels” of society as he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the AI Impact Summit in the national capital.Describing the interaction as “great”, Pichai said discussions centred on how Google could support the Prime Minister’s vision of leveraging artificial intelligence to drive inclusive growth and expand access to opportunity.“At the AI Impact Summit, our message is clear: we believe India is going to have an extraordinary trajectory with AI, and we want to be a partner,” Pichai said, underlining the company’s long-term commitment to India’s digital transformation.Prime Minister Modi described his meeting with Pichai as “a delight”, saying the two discussed India’s growing capabilities in emerging technologies and the role of its talented youth in driving innovation. He also explored ways to deepen collaboration between Google, academic institutions and India’s technology workforce to strengthen the AI ecosystem.The engagement reflects the government’s broader push to position India as a global AI hub while ensuring that technological advances translate into tangible benefits across healthcare, agriculture, education and governance.PM meets Vinod KhoslaThe founder of Sun Microsystem, Vinod Khosla, who is in New Delhi for the AI summit, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.Pichai highlighted Google’s recently announced $15 billion investment to build foundational AI infrastructure in India, including the launch of a full-stack AI Hub in Visakhapatnam. He also announced the America-India Connect initiative—new strategic subsea fibre-optic cable routes designed to enhance the reach, reliability and resilience of digital connectivity between the US, India and countries across the Southern Hemisphere.The connectivity push builds on Google’s global subsea cable network spanning the Pacific, Africa and other regions, aimed at strengthening digital backbone infrastructure essential for AI-driven services.Google also unveiled a series of initiatives to strengthen AI adoption in governance and scientific research. Through its philanthropic arm, the company announced a $30 million Google.org Global AI for Government Innovation Impact Challenge to support partnerships that transform public services using AI, alongside a separate $30 million AI for Science Impact Challenge to fund researchers deploying AI for scientific breakthroughs.The company said that Google DeepMind would establish new partnerships with Indian Government bodies and local institutions to unlock discoveries in science and education. The collaboration will provide access to frontier AI models and power innovation hubs with generative AI tools, as part of DeepMind’s broader national partnerships for AI initiative.In climate research, Google will set up a Centre for Climate Technology in collaboration with the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to accelerate scalable, AI-powered climate solutions.Emphasising that infrastructure must be matched with human capacity, the tech giant said Google would expand AI skilling efforts in India.The company is launching an AI Professional Certificate programme globally in partnership with governments, educational institutions and employers. In India, it will collaborate with Wadhwani AI to extend the programme to students and early-career professionals, including scholarships to widen access.Google also announced a landmark partnership with Karmayogi Bharat to advance Mission Karmayogi’s objective of building a future-ready civil service. Google Cloud will support the iGOT Karmayogi platform, which serves over 20 million public servants across more than 800 districts, by digitising legacy training content and progressively enabling resources in over 18 Indian languages.On the consumer front, Pichai said Google was rolling out a live speech-to-speech translation model enabling real-time conversations in over 70 languages, including 10 Indian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and Telugu.The company is also enhancing Search Live—its real-time voice and camera tool—to allow users to ask questions about what they see in their own language. Improvements to Google Lens will help detect blurry images and prompt follow-up questions to improve search accuracy.For students, new self-study features and JEE Main practice tests have been added to the Gemini app in India, aimed at personalising exam preparation through AI-powered assistance. India is among the top three global markets for both Gemini and AI Mode in Search.
