On the back foot, Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Party government today gave a clean chit to the influential Rasokhana Shri Nabh Kanwal Raja Sahib over allegations of possessing 139 unaccounted saroops of Guru Granth Sahib “found at the Banga shrine”.Finance Minister Harpal Cheema today visited the shrine along with Anandpur Sahib MP Malvinder Singh Kang and Education Minister Harjot Bains at Majara Nau Abad village and said there was no discrepancy regarding the saroops at the shrine. His statement comes in the wake of the challenge thrown by the management committee of the Rasokhana to the government’s claim of tracing 139 saroops there. The committee had asked Banga MLA Sukhwinder Sukhi and Anandpur Sahib MP Kang to “draw the line” and clarify whether they stood with the government or the shrine, which commands a massive following in the Doaba region. Sukhi, elected on an SAD ticket before joining the AAP, resigned yesterday as chairman of the Punjab State Container and Warehousing Corporation as the issue snowballed. On Maghi Mela, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had announced at Muktsar that the Special Investigating Team formed to probe the case of 328 missing saroops had found 169 saroops at the Banga shrine. He had said that while records existed for only 30 saroops, the SIT traced 139 that were unaccounted for. However, giving a clean chit to the management committee of the shrine today, Cheema said the records at the holy site were found to be in order. Saying that the CM would visit the shrine soon, he did not rule out “miscommunication” by members of the SIT while conveying the matter.“For a long time, 328 holy saroops of Guru Granth Sahib have been missing. There has been restlessness among the sangat that these should be traced and kept in safe hands. A probe was underway and information was received about the 169 saroops. The investigation is complete and no discrepancy has been found in the Rasokhana’s records. The record here is absolutely correct. There was no case against the committee earlier, nor is there any now. The CM will also be visiting soon. The probe into the 328 saroops will continue.”Asked whether there was carelessness on the part of the SIT in conveying the information, Cheema said, “Maybe there was a miscommunication. It has been removed. The record is proper.” On whether Sukhi would be reinstated as chairman, Cheema said, “Certainly, we will think about it.”Explaining Sukhi’s absence at the shrine today, he added, “He did not come today because his father’s health is very serious and he is on a ventilator. I will be visiting his house soon.”Notably, the CM’s earlier statement regarding the saroops found at the shrine had triggered a political storm in the state, with several Opposition leaders condemning his remarks and visiting the shrine in Banga.
