The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will hold its executive meeting on Thursday amid controversy over the alleged “sale” of land belonging to Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali.Officials said all arrangements had been made for the meeting, which was expected to take up key “panthic” issues along with routine matters. The meeting comes amid allegations that the SGPC leadership shielded a senior official in connection with the alleged land deal. Opposition leaders, including Giani Harpreet Singh, president of SAD (Punar Surjit), have accused SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami of protecting a high-ranking official.Giani Harpreet Singh alleged the SGPC’s February 13 decision to reassign gurdwaras falling under Section 85 of the Sikh Gurdwaras Act from SGPC secretary Partap Singh to Additional Secretary Gurinder Singh Mathrewal raised suspicion. He also questioned the SGPC’s claim that a senior official’s signature had been forged before the conclusion of the probe. On February 9, the Mohali police registered a case of cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy against seven persons, including a gurdwara manager, on the complaint of SGPC secretary Partap Singh in connection with the alleged sale of land at Saini Majra village. The developments have heightened speculation that the executive panel may take strict action against those found responsible.
