Haryana govt hikes minimum wages by 35 per cent, a ‘historic’ move for workers

The Haryana Government has approved a major hike of up to 35 per cent in minimum wages across all categories of workers, with effect from April 1. The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting held here today.Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said the increase would significantly improve the income of workers and strengthen the economic condition of their families. He added that out of seven agenda items placed before the Cabinet, six were approved.Labour Minister Anil Vij termed the decision “historic”, stating that the state has taken a lead in implementing reforms aligned with new labour laws. He said the move would benefit lakhs of workers and give a fresh impetus to the economy.“This notable increase in workers’ income will not only improve their standard of living but also give a new impetus to the state’s economy,” Vij said. He added, “Workers are the backbone of both the national and state economies, and without their empowerment, overall development is not possible.”As per the revised rates, wages of unskilled workers have been increased from Rs 11,274.60 to Rs 15,220, marking a rise of about Rs 3,945.40 (around 35%). Similarly, semi-skilled workers will now get Rs 16,780.74, up from Rs 12,430.18, an increase of Rs 4,350.56.The wages of skilled workers have been raised from Rs 13,704.31 to Rs 18,500.81, reflecting an increase of Rs 4,796.50. Highly skilled workers will now receive Rs 19,425.85, up from Rs 14,389.52, an increase of Rs 5,036.33. All categories have seen an increase of roughly 35 per cent.The minister said the government would continue to take further steps to strengthen social security, healthcare facilities and safe working conditions for workers.
