Concerns raised by Punjab’s Congress leaders were one of the major reasons behind the Himachal Pradesh government rationalising the entry tax on five-seater and 6-12 seater passenger vehicles.The tax on these two categories has been reduced from Rs 130 to Rs 100.  As per the sources close to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the Punjab Congress leaders called up the Chief Minister and shared their concerns over the impact the enhanced tax would have on the people in Punjab.“Punjab’s Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa and Congress president Raja Warring called up the Chief Minister and apprised him of their concerns. Besides, the concerns of people living in the border areas of both the states were taken into consideration,” the sources pointed out.Meanwhile, Sukhu today said that the protests over entry tax were unjustified as only a small change had been made in just one category of vehicles.“We have increased the entry tax on five-seater passenger vehicles from Rs 70 to Rs 100.  There’s no increase in other categories,” he said.The CM had made a spur-of-the moment announcement in the House on Tuesday that the tax on passenger vehicles would be reverted to actual slabs – Rs 70 for five seater vehicles and Rs 110 for 6-12 seater vehicles. Later, following deliberations with the officials of the Excise and Taxation Department late evening, a flat rate of Rs 100 was fixed.On being asked that Punjab was mulling a reciprocal tax, the Chief Minister said the issue was being misunderstood.  “We have not imposed any new tax, it’s been there for the last 40 years. I will anyway speak to Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann soon on the issue,” he said.
