The Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Monday unanimously passed a resolution demanding that the Centre confer the Bharat Ratna — the country’s highest civilian award — posthumously on BSP founder Kanshi Ram. The resolution was moved to mark the 92nd birth anniversary of the Dalit leader that was celebrated on Sunday. The Congress MLAs led by Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa supported the resolution but rushed to point out that only yesterday party leader Rahul Gandhi had made the demand in a letter to PM Narendra Modi.Refusing to give credit to the Congress, Minister Aman Arora said AAP national convener Arvind Keriwal had previously raised the demand in 2016 while visiting Kanshi Ram’s native village. Moving the resolution, Finance Minister Harpal Cheema said the honour for the late Dalit leader would be a befitting tribute to him. “The Messiah of the poor and downtrodden successfully organised Dalits, backwards and minorities into a common political force,” he added. The resolution saw an hour-long debate, with members across party lines, remembering Kanshi Ram’s role in the socio-political awakening of the “Bahujan Samaj”. BSP legislator Nachattar Pal too supported the resolution.Moments after legislators unanimously passed the resolution, there was commotion in the House when AAP MLA Manjit Singh Bilaspur moved a censure motion against Bajwa for his alleged “casteist remarks” against PWD Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO during a political rally in Jandiala Guru on February 6.Terming it an insult to the Dalits, the treasury benches passed the resolution by voice vote as the Congress MLAs staged a walkout. Bajwa termed this as a “diversionary tactic”.AAP legislators protest cooking gas ‘crisis’AAP legislator and ministers raised slogans while protesting against the BJP-led Centre for the cooking gas “shortage” in the country.
