India on Wednesday signalled its intent to rebuild momentum in ties with Bangladesh’s new government as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held wide-ranging talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart Khalilur Rahman in New Delhi.The meeting, also attended by Bangladesh Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir, focused on reviving bilateral engagement and exploring avenues to deepen cooperation across sectors.According to an official statement, Jaishankar reiterated India’s desire to engage “constructively” with the new dispensation in Dhaka and strengthen bilateral ties through existing institutional mechanisms. Both sides agreed to examine proposals aimed at expanding cooperation, with follow-up official-level engagements expected soon.The two ministers also exchanged views on key regional and global developments, underlining the importance of coordination between the neighbours amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.During his visit, Rahman also met National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, signalling a broad-based engagement spanning security and energy domains.Sources told The Tribune that Dhaka raised two immediate priorities during the discussions — restoration of reciprocal tourist visa services and enhanced cooperation on energy security.Bangladesh recently resumed issuing tourist visas to Indian citizens after a pause of several weeks triggered by security concerns. It has now urged India to reciprocate by restoring visa services for Bangladeshi nationals, a move seen as crucial for reviving people-to-people exchanges and cross-border travel.Energy security also figured prominently in the talks, with both sides exploring ways to strengthen cooperation in the sector amid regional uncertainties and fluctuating global markets. Bangladesh has been keen to secure stable energy supplies, while India views connectivity and energy partnerships as central pillars of its neighbourhood policy.The meeting assumes significance as it marks one of the first high-level engagements between the two countries following political changes in Bangladesh. Officials described the talks as part of a broader effort to stabilise and reset ties, which have witnessed periodic strains in recent months.India has consistently emphasised its commitment to maintaining strong and mutually beneficial relations with Bangladesh, a key neighbour in South Asia with deep economic, cultural and strategic linkages.Wednesday’s discussions indicate a shared willingness to move forward pragmatically, with both sides looking to quickly operationalise decisions through structured dialogue mechanisms.
