The Indian men’s basketball team was stuck in Doha and its FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifier against Lebanon was postponed following escalating military tensions in West Asia.India had suffered a Group D defeat against Qatar in Doha on Friday and were scheduled to travel the next day to Lebanon to play at the Nouhad Nawfal Sports Complex in Zouk Mikael. However, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced on Saturday that four qualifying matches in Groups C and D, including Lebanon vs India, would be postponed to the next qualification window in late June. The decision came hours after the United States and Israel launched military airstrikes on major cities in Iran, including Tehran, leading to heightened security concerns across the region. As a precautionary measure, FIBA said it had deferred the games to prioritise the safety of players, officials and staff. As a result, the Indian contingent has been unable to travel out of Doha, with flight operations currently restricted.Indian forward Pranav Prince said the situation was unexpected but confirmed that the team is safe and being supported. Speaking to Sportstar, Prince indicated that the squad was prepared to travel before the situation escalated, after which they were advised to wait for further instructions. He added that the Basketball Federation of India (BFI), along with the Sports Ministry, is exploring all possible options to ensure the team’s safe return to India once flights resume.Prince also said the team was disappointed to miss the Lebanon fixture, having prepared for the contest. In a statement issued from Mies, Switzerland, FIBA confirmed that all Group C and Group D games scheduled for Monday, March 2, will be played at the same venues during the third qualification window in late June. The affected fixtures include Iran vs Syria, Iraq vs Jordan, Lebanon vs India and Qatar vs Saudi Arabia. The BFI said on Sunday that it is coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and the Indian Embassy in Doha to facilitate the contingent’s safe return. The federation said player safety remains its highest priority.India are currently bottom of Group D with three points from three matches, while Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Lebanon are tied on five points each.
