The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) on Friday snapped its alliance with the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) following the circulation of a purported video involving its founder, Humayun Kabir, and decided to contest the West Bengal Assembly election independently. In an official statement, AIMIM said the revelations attributed to Kabir had raised serious concerns about the vulnerability and dignity of Muslims in the state. “Humayun Kabir’s revelations have shown how vulnerable Bengal’s Muslims are. AIMIM cannot associate with any statements where the integrity of Muslims is brought into question,” the party said, announcing its immediate decision to sever ties with Kabir’s party. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on April 9 accused Kabir of having links with senior BJP leaders and being involved in a conspiracy to defeat Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the upcoming Assembly election, following the emergence of a purported video of Kabir. The party had accused the BJP of orchestrating a massive Rs 1,000-crore scam to manipulate the election, with Kabir acting as a key player who allegedly received an advance of Rs 200 crore. The party of Asaduddin Owaisi further emphasised the socio-economic challenges faced by Muslims in West Bengal, describing them as “one of the poorest, neglected and oppressed communities”. It criticised decades of so-called secular governance in the state, asserting that little had been done to improve the condition of the community.Reiterating its political stance, AIMIM said its participation in elections is aimed at providing an independent voice to marginalised sections. “AIMIM’s policy in contesting elections in any state is to ensure that marginalised communities have their own political representation,” the statement noted. The party also made it clear that it will contest the upcoming West Bengal Assembly election. Both AIMIM and AJUP had formed an alliance to contest the Bengal election. Owaisi had expressed optimism about the alliance, saying both parties are committed to making it successful in West Bengal. He also emphasised the need for stronger political leadership within the Muslim community, noting that its absence can impact social and economic progress.
