Kanyakumari MP Vijay Vasanth on Wednesday moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha seeking an urgent discussion on the plight of more than 1,000 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu who are stranded in Iran and other Gulf countries. In a notice submitted to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the Congress MP said the fishermen, largely from Kanyakumari and neighbouring districts, had travelled abroad for employment but were now caught in a worsening crisis due to the conflict situation.Vasanth said the fishermen and their families back home were under immense stress as uncertainty continues over their safety. He added that many of the stranded fishermen were living in fear and facing severe hardship, with reports that several were struggling to access even basic necessities, including food. The MP urged the government and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to take immediate steps to evacuate stranded Indians and relocate them to safer places. “I move that the House adjourn its proceedings to discuss a matter of urgent public importance,” Vasanth said in the motion, calling the situation a humanitarian crisis that required immediate intervention by the Centre. He also sought swift diplomatic action to ensure the safe return of fishermen to India, stressing that delays could further aggravate the hardships faced by them in the conflict-affected region. The adjournment motion seeks to press the government for a clear response and urgent measures to bring the stranded fishermen back home safely.
