In a dramatic reversal that has caught the Kerala political circles by surprise, Bindu Menon, wife of Transport Minister KB Ganesh Kumar, has announced that she is withdrawing her public campaign against the minister. The decision comes after the minister reportedly offered a formal apology on Tuesday morning, characterising the explosive conflict as a “family matter” that can be resolved through private dialogue. The controversy, which broke out over the weekend, had quickly spiralled into a major political crisis for the LDF government. Menon had levelled serious allegations against the minister, claiming that she had caught him in a “compromising situation” at their family residence outside the state capital. She had further alleged that the minister’s personal staff had physically obstructed her and attempted to seize her mobile phone when she tried to document the incident.Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Menon clarified that her previous public statements were an “emotional outburst” triggered by the minister’s dismissive remarks. She expressed that she had been deeply hurt by his comments describing her as “mentally unstable” and his public claim of having “5,000 love affairs”.“I was waiting for him to admit his mistake,” Menon stated. She revealed that the minister called her sister and spoke emotionally after she initially refused to take his calls. “Ganesh has now apologised and assured me that we can resolve this through discussion. I have no intention of pursuing legal action or a police complaint. I never wanted to destroy his life; I acted out of the deep affection I still have for him.”The apology comes at a critical juncture. Prior to this reconciliation, the opposition UDF had been vociferously demanding the minister’s resignation. Reports had suggested that Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was under pressure to ask for Ganesh Kumar’s resignation during today’s Cabinet meeting to mitigate the damage ahead of the upcoming Assembly election. The controversy had also highlighted significant questions regarding women’s safety after Menon claimed that the police, contacted via the 112 helpline, arrived at the scene but failed to intervene or record her statement.
