Generation irks

THE wholesale abandonment of young people by successive governments is shaping up to be a national catastrophe.

Over the last two decades, kids were sold a monumental lie: that going to university or college after school would automatically set them up for life.

The Government has made a life on disability benefits more attractive than work Credit: Getty

It didn’t matter if the course they were pushed into was in Harry Potter studies, sociology or the psychology of fashion, youngsters were persuaded it was still their best route into a well-paid job.

Instead, thanks in part to Labour whacking tax on businesses and squeezing recruitment, huge numbers now find themselves saddled with massive student loan debts — and no job.

Far worse though, is the way the Government has made a life on disability benefits more attractive than work.

The number of 16 to 24-year-olds claiming PIP disability benefits is set to nearly triple to almost ONE MILLION by 2040 if no action is taken.

The cost to the taxpayer will soar from £4.3billion today to a staggering £9.2billion a year by 2040-41.

There are two ways in which the Government MUST act to reverse this crisis:

Help business breach the skills gap by encouraging more apprenticeships and training rather than let kids waste time on meaningless degrees.

And a ban on claiming benefits for minor mental health problems which are better solved with work, not the dole.

Brextinction

EUROPE minister Nick Thomas-Symonds has got one thing right: the Government has NO mandate to reverse Brexit.

Labour went into the last General Election faithfully vowing not to rejoin the Single Market or a customs union.

Now, less than two years later, Thomas-Symonds — the minister leading Keir Starmer’s “reset” with the EU — says the Prime Minister’s previous “red lines” are up for redrawing.

That means Britain once again becoming an EU rule-taker and paying billions every year for the privilege.

Thomas-Symonds suggests his party could fight the next General Election on a pledge to rejoin.

He might find Labour’s already-dire popularity ratings plunging even further.

Failure of state

EVERY single Government agency involved failed the innocent victims of Valdo Calocane’s knife rampage.

Three years after a senseless and avoidable tragedy, their families are still waiting for change.

Those mistakes included repeated failure to deal with Calocane because he was black and healthcare workers feared being accused of racism.

The families don’t want to wait another year for the public inquiry report’s findings to be published.

They deserve change NOW.
