Women officers are also playing a crucial role in maintaining law and order and regulating traffic on the busy roads of Amritsar.Managing traffic in a bustling city like Amritsar is no easy task, especially with the ever-increasing number of vehicles and the steady influx of tourists.However, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amandeep Kaur is leading from the front, ensuring smooth traffic management while inspiring many young women to consider joining the police force. She believes that dedication to duty and cooperation from the public are the keys to effective traffic regulation.Popularly known among the public as “Lady Singham”, Amandeep Kaur has earned a reputation for taking firm action against traffic violations while also maintaining a humane and approachable attitude. Being a woman officer, her leadership style balances strict enforcement with sensitivity towards citizens.“It has been challenging to regulate traffic, especially with the huge inflow of vehicles. The holy city is visited by hundreds of thousands of devotees and tourists who come to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple and to witness the world-famous Beating the Retreat ceremony at the Wagah border,” she said.She also pointed out that traffic management becomes more difficult due to encroachments on roads, particularly in the walled city area. “Many roads have been narrowed because of encroachments by traders and shopkeepers. Despite these challenges, we are making continuous efforts to ensure obstruction-free movement of traffic,” she added.Calling her duty a service to the holy city, she said, “I consider my work as sewa of this sacred city founded by the fourth Sikh master, Guru Ram Das.”Encouraging more women to step forward and join uniformed services, she emphasised the importance of family support. “Families must support their daughters if they want to pursue careers in the police or other challenging fields. With encouragement from home, girls can achieve anything,” she said.She also expressed concern over the trolling and criticism faced by women police officers on social media. “Constructive feedback is always welcome, but unnecessary trolling or targeting women officers simply because they are women should stop. Society should respect and encourage women who are working hard to serve the public,” she added.
