Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab Cabinet minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia has filed a discharge application in a case registered during a protest in Chandigarh five years ago.He appeared in a Chandigarh court today in this regard. The police had registered the case against Majithia and 23 other SAD leaders in 2021 when they were going to protest at the Chief Minister’s residence in Chandigarh. The FIR was registered for offences punishable under Sections 188, 186, 353, 332 and 34 of the IPC on the complaint of an Inspector who alleged that the Akali  leaders attacked them while protesting at MLA Hostel in Sector 3, Chandigarh. The leaders were demanding that they be allowed to go to the official residence of the Punjab Chief Minister to submit a memorandum regarding the demands of farmers and people of Punjab. In the discharge application filed  through advocate Rajesh Kumar Rai, Majithia  denied the charges and stated that all allegations levelled by the police were “wrong and baseless”. The protest was peaceful, he said, adding that the prosecution had failed to prove any substantial evidence in the charge sheet. He said no case had been made against the accused. He said that co-accused Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal and Daljeet Singh Cheema had filed a quashing petition in the high court which was allowed and the FIR was quashed qua the petitioners. In the present case, the report under Section 173 CrPC is illegal, he said.
