Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday presented his government’s four-year rural development report card, claiming major infrastructural push while accusing the Centre of extending a step-motherly treatment to the state.Addressing mediapersons here, the CM said Rs 2,367.64 crore was spent on rural development in the last fiscal under the 15th Finance Commission, which was double the amount spent in 2024–25.He said Rs 1,336.70 crore was spent on drinking water, sanitation, solid waste management and other essential services, while Rs 1,030.94 crore was spent on panchayat buildings, libraries, anganwadis, playgrounds, streets and other works.“A holistic development of villages has taken place in the past four years, involving massive construction works and cleaning of ponds as the state generated money by removing illegal encroachments from government lands and other means,” he added.Mann said Punjab had 13,236 panchayats, the polls for which were conducted in 2024. “We have enhanced the honorarium of sarpanches from Rs 1,200 to Rs 2,000 per month, he said.Mann said the government has increased by leasing village common land.“Illegal encroachments on panchayat land were removed, thereby, increasing the revenue of the state. Over four years, the state government has generated Rs 1,842.78 crore by leasing shamlat land,” he added. He said to channel the energy of the youth in a positive direction, around 3,000 playgrounds were being developed in villages.“These grounds collectively will be spread over 6,500 acres, for which 3,148 locations have been identified,” he added. Mann said his government had also started the process to construct 251 village libraries, of which 231 had already been completed.‘Central grants stopped’Replying to a query, Mann said, “The Centre is meeting a step-motherly treatment to Punjab. Grants under the RDF, GST, NHM and others have been unduly stopped by the Centre as they are envious of the state,” he added.“The sole reason is that Punjab does not vote for the BJP due to which the Centre indulges in this grave injustice,” the CM alleged. He added that the Disaster Management Fund allotted by the Centre was meagre and needed to be revised.“The state will oppose this discrimination tooth and nail and no stone will be left unturned for getting the legitimate share for the state. This issue will be taken both legally and administratively at every platform,” he added.
