Amid reports that migrants are heading back home due to a lack of cooking fuel, the Centre has decided to double the allocation of 5 kg cylinders to states. In a letter to all chief secretaries on Tuesday, Union Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal has conveyed the decision. The Secretary has said, “The daily quantity of 5kg FTL cylinders in each state available for disbursal to migrant labourers is being doubled based on average daily supply (of cylinders) during March 2 and 3. These 5kg FTL cylinders will be at the disposal of state government and its Food/Civil Supplies Department for supplying only to migrant labourers in their state, with the assistance of oil marketing companies.”The move is part of a calibrated strategy to restore the availability of cooking fuel to households. The raise comes after the government enhanced overall allocation of commercial LPG to states to pre-war levels of 70 per cent of the average monthly consumption. The government has also been diversifying imports of crude oil and natural gas amid the West Asia crisis, and has said that there is no dry out anywhere yet.Free trade LPG cylinders of 5kg are available with authorised distributorships of oil marketing companies, and will now be given to state supplies departments to disburse.
