A 22-year-old Indian student from Karnataka studying in the US was found dead in California, six days after he was reported missing, Consulate General of India in San Francisco confirmed on Sunday.Saketh Sreenivasaiah, a postgraduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, had been last seen near Lake Anza in the Berkeley Hills on February 9, according to the Consulate and local authorities. Search operations involving law enforcement, community volunteers and park officials focused on the lake and adjacent Tilden Regional Park areas after his disappearance.In a statement on February 14, the Indian Consulate said it was “deeply concerned” about Saketh’s disappearance and was in touch with his family and local authorities to locate him.On February 15, the mission reported that local police had confirmed the recovery of his body, extending “heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this profoundly difficult time”.It said consular officers were assisting the family with necessary formalities and would coordinate the repatriation of his mortal remains to India at the earliest.Saketh, originally from Srigandada Kaval near Bengaluru, was pursuing a Master’s in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and had previously graduated with a Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, in 2025.His backpack — containing his passport and laptop — was found abandoned in the Park Hills neighbourhood earlier in the week, helping guide search efforts.The circumstances leading to his death have not been officially disclosed by law enforcement. Local reports quoting friends and classmates suggest Saketh had experienced emotional distress in the weeks before his disappearance, while one roommate said he had “stopped caring about life”. However, authorities have not publicly confirmed the cause of his death.
