Four persons have been arrested in connection with the daylight murder of Harvinder Singh, alias Happy, the sarpanch of Patto Hira Singh village in Moga, officials said on Sunday. The suspects were apprehended in Leh, Ladakh, where they had allegedly fled to evade arrest, police said.Moga SSP Ajay Gandhi said a team led by CIA in-charge Inspector Daljit Singh traced the accused, who have been identified as Manpreet Singh of Jaimalwala village, Jashanpreet Singh of Chand Purana, Yogesh Sharma of Moga and Harminder Singh alias Hinda of Jai Singh Wala village. The suspects were flown from Leh to Chandigarh and brought to Moga on Saturday evening.DSP Dalveer Singh said the assailants allegedly used a rented SUV to carry out the crime before abandoning it and fleeing in another vehicle. The killing took place on the morning of March 6. Harvinder Singh had just arrived at his private gym in Baghapurana, when assailants in an SUV opened fire.Witnesses reported that approximately 15 to 20 rounds were fired, leaving the sarpanch with no chance of escape. Although he was rushed to a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his multiple gunshot wounds.According to officials, the investigation indicates that the murder was fueled by personal enmity rather than gang-related activity. They said the prime suspect, Manpreet Singh Bablu, allegedly suspected his wife of having a relationship with the sarpanch.Sources revealed that Harvinder Singh had been receiving death threats for some time and had even commissioned a bulletproof vehicle for his safety. He was using his standard Mahindra Thar on the day of the attack.Police record showed that the deceased sarpanch was a history-sheeter, with nearly a dozen FIRs registered against him in the past.Following the murder, the victim’s family staged a massive protest at Baghapurana Main Chowk, demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits. The case also took a political turn when the family alleged that a local AAP MLA had previously threatened the sarpanch over his involvement in the domestic dispute, an allegation the MLA has since denied. The four arrested suspects will be produced in a Moga court, while further investigation continues into the broader conspiracy behind the killing, the DSP said.
