A day after the governing body of Dyal Singh Colleges approved a proposal to rename the institution as Banda Singh Bahadur College or Majithia College, top University of Delhi officials clarified that no final decision had yet been taken.The governing body, during a meeting held on Saturday under the chairmanship of DS Chauhan, approved the proposal recommending either of the two names and overruled dissent notes submitted by two teacher representatives.Once a governing body clears an agenda, the final decision rests with the university administration.Speaking exclusively to The Tribune, DU Registrar Vikas Gupta said the renaming proposal was still under consideration and had not been finalised.“The governing body’s decision is not final regarding the proposed renaming of Dyal Singh Evening College. The matter will be placed before the next Executive Council meeting, and the final decision will depend on the outcome of the EC’s deliberations,” Gupta said.He, however, did not specify a timeline for the Executive Council meeting.Teachers and staff members of the college have been opposing any move to rename the institution, arguing that it undermines the legacy of philanthropist Dyal Singh Majithia, founder of The Tribune Trust.The governing body’s approval of the renaming proposal has further heightened concerns among faculty members, who argue that it could violate the agreement between the Dyal Singh Trust and Delhi University. According to the agreement, any alteration in the character of the institution could jeopardise the management’s control over the college land and premises.
