While people across the country gear up for a long weekend beginning with Good Friday, the majority of teachers from Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools across Punjab have been directed to report at evaluation centres for checking Class 10 board examination papers. With CBSE Class 10 results for the 2026 academic session — involving over 25 lakh students nationwide — expected to be declared by mid-April (tentatively between April 14 and 27), the board has accelerated the evaluation process, placing additional pressure on teachers.Sources said teachers are being pushed to fast-track checking, with city coordinators frantically calling in additional staff to meet tight deadlines.Even those with little experience, including first-year teachers, have been asked to report for duty. “Decisions are taken by bureaucrats sitting in air-conditioned offices, but the onus of delivering results in record time falls on us. Calling teachers on holidays reflects poor planning by CBSE.Staff for evaluation should have been assigned well in advance,” said a Ludhiana-based teacher, who has been asked to report on Good Friday.A city coordinator, requesting anonymity, said they were merely following directives.“Earlier, results were declared in the first or second week of May. This year, they have been preponed by nearly a month, leaving us hard-pressed and forcing us to rope in extra staff,” the coordinator said.Over 1.10 lakh students from Punjab appeared for the Class 10 examinations conducted between February 17 and March 11 this year. The board has also introduced a two-exam system for Class 10. While the first examination is mandatory, students can opt for a second attempt in May to improve their scores. This move is believed to be in alignment with the National Education Policy 2020, aimed at reducing exam stress and offering flexibility. Under the revised system, the better of the two scores will be considered for the final marksheet. The result of the first exam will guide students in deciding whether to reappear for improvement. Traditionally, CBSE has declared Class 10 results in the second week of May. Once announced, students can access their results on the official websites by entering their roll number and date of birth. The scorecard will detail subject-wise marks, total score, and qualifying status. Repeated attempts to contact CBSE Regional Officer Sanjay Bisht and Deputy Secretary (Media and Public Relations) Niti Shankar Sharma for comments remained unsuccessful. Their response is still awaited.
