Several Panthic bodies on Saturday sought the release of Bandi Singhs and resolved to intensify the stir over it if the Centre failed to fulfil the demand. They also sought parole by March 2 to Jagtar Singh Hawara, the convict in the assassination case of former Punjab CM Beant Singh. The demands were made at a gathering by the Bandi Singh Rihai Manch at Hawara Kalan village in Khamano subdivison of Fatehgarh Sahib. Representatives of various farmer bodies also attended the rally. They demanded that Hawara, currently lodged in the Tihar jail, be given parole so that he could meet his ailing mother. The participants deliberated on the future course of the agitation for the release of the Bandi Singhs — the Sikh prisoners languishing in jails for decades in terror-related cases.Currently, the Qaumi Insaf Morcha is holding a protest over the demand at the Mohali-Chandigarh border.Addressing the gathering, SAD (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann said the issue would be linked with farmers concerns and a major agitation would be launched soon from the Attari-Wagah border. He said the date for the proposed protest would be announced on Hola Mohalla.Giani Harpreet Singh, president of the SAD( Punar Surjeet), a breakaway faction of the party, said the Punjab Assembly should pass a resolution for the release of the prisoners, drawing parallels with Tamil Nadu, where the Assembly had facilitated the release of certain convicts through a resolution. He alleged that successive governments claiming to be Panthic failed to take concrete steps on the issue.SAD MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali said he had written to the Assembly Speaker, seeking introduction of two resolutions during the upcoming Budget session regarding the release of Bandi Singhs and the withdrawal of the National Security Act against Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh.
