A team of the Assam Police on Tuesday reached the Delhi residence of Congress leader Pawan Khera, a day after an FIR was registered against him following allegations made against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife.Sources said the Assam Police team is being assisted by Delhi Police, in line with legal procedure that requires local police to be informed when officers from another state conduct operations in the national capital. The development follows a complaint filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma with the Crime Branch of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate. The FIR, registered as Case No. 04/2026, accuses Khera of making false and defamatory allegations. The complaint came after Khera, during a press conference in Delhi on Sunday, alleged that the Chief Minister’s wife held multiple passports and raised questions over her citizenship status. He also sought action from authorities, linking the issue to electoral eligibility.Rejecting the allegations, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma termed them “completely false” and said the documents cited were fabricated. She claimed that the purported passports were “AI-generated and photoshopped”, adding that the matter involves violation of personal rights and should be investigated by the Assam Police.Responding to the controversy, Himanta Biswa Sarma said he would initiate both civil and criminal defamation proceedings against Khera. In a public statement, he described the allegations as “malicious, fabricated and politically motivated”, and said the law would take its course. The Chief Minister also listed what he described as discrepancies in the documents cited by Khera, including spelling errors, mismatched details and irregularities in passport data and identification numbers. He said these inconsistencies pointed to possible digital manipulation. The row has escalated into a political flashpoint, with Congress leaders backing Khera and questioning the Chief Minister. Gaurav Gogoi demanded a probe into the Chief Minister’s assets, while reiterating the need for transparency. The controversy comes just days before voting in the Assam Assembly elections, scheduled for April 9 across 126 constituencies, adding a sharp political edge to the dispute.
