The two accused, arrested with nearly 53 kg of heroin, valued at around Rs 265 crore in the international black market, were to be paid just Rs 1 lakh for delivering the consignment further, investigators have revealed.During questioning, the accused also confessed that multiple consignments of heroin sent by Pakistani smugglers had already been moved and supplied before their arrest, indicating their deeper involvement in the cross-border narcotics supply chain.Sources privy to the investigation said the arrested duo — Gurjit Singh alias Jeet (30) and Ranjit Singh alias Dhillu (20) — had no previous criminal record and were apprehended for the first time with such a massive drug haul. Both work as daily labourers and were allegedly lured by Pakistan-based drug traffickers with promises of quick money.Further investigation is underway to trace the complete supply chain of contraband. Around 96 kg of heroin has been seized within just two days in Amristsar alone, underlining the scale at which narcotics are flowing across the Indo-Pakistan border. Thr probe so far has revealed a layered and well-organised network, wherein drugs dropped by drones near the international border are first retrieved by a “first-layer” team, which then stashes the consignments at predetermined locations on the directions of handlers based across the border.“Gurjit and Ranjit acted as couriers, forming the second layer of this well-oiled drug network,” a senior officer involved in the investigation said. He disclosed that Ranjit Singh admitted to having successfully received and stashed heroin consignments on at least three occasions, strictly following instructions from Pakistani handlers. The police have seized mobile phones belonging to both accused and sent them for forensic examination. Investigators are analysing call detail records, mobile tower locations and digital footprints to corroborate the disclosures made during interrogation. Several deleted contact numbers and chat data are also being retrieved with the help of cyber experts, which officials believe could expose more links in the smuggling chain. It may be recalled that the Gharinda police had arrested the two accused on Thursday with 52.8 kg of heroin. Initial investigations had revealed that the contraband was dropped by Pakistani smugglers using drones at different intervals in the Attari sector.
