A day after the cold-blooded murders of ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard jawan Ashok Kumar at the Adhian checkpost here, the police seem to have made no headway in the case. However, CM Bhagwant Mann said there were reports that the two could have “fought” among themselves. “We will investigate this,” he added.Meanwhile, questions are being raised about the absence of BSF personnel from the Adhian checkpost, which was supposed to be a joint unit of the police and the BSF. Three BSF men were deployed at the checkpost on the day of the incident but failed to report.Rs 1 cr ex gratia for kin of each copThe Punjab Government has announced an ex gratia relief of Rs 1 crore for the families of each of the deceased. A tarpaulin has been substituted for the door.A senior officer said, “Chances of terrorists making their way into Adhian village from across the border, just 500m away, are high. The wire-fencing was damaged at several places during floods last year. Militants might have used this damaged fencing to enter from the Pakistan side.”The police are also probing the gangster angle.Pakistan-based insurgents had crossed the border from Bamial side in Pathankot district during the 2015 Dinanagar police station and the 2016 Pathankot air force base attacks.Intriguingly, 36 hours after the gruesome incident, no police officer was willing to go on record. SSP Aditya said, “The probe is on.” He refused to divulge whether the assailants had crossed the border or they were present on the Indian side. The SSP said, “Three BSF men were on duty that day. He said the checkpost was manned by both the BSF and the police. “On the fateful day, two cops and three BSF jawans were deployed at the check post. However, the BSF men did not report for duty. If it is found to be true, it points to a systematic failure of our security agencies in a sector, which is highly sensitive.” He urged the Home Minister to immediately convene a high-level meeting, apart from initiating a comprehensive time-bound probe into the incident. The MP termed the incident as “an operational failure on the part of both the BSF and Punjab Police”.
