Amid a massive uproar over the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) equity regulations for higher education institutions, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday said he would not allow the law to be misused. The regulations have triggered protests from a section of students calling for their withdrawal. Critics claim the new rules could lead to “harassment” of students in the general category and create “divisions” along caste lines.Under the regulations, every higher educational institution will be duty-bound to eradicate discrimination and take appropriate protective and preventive measures to safeguard stakeholders’ interests without prejudice to caste, creed, religion, language, ethnicity, gender or disability. In Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, City Magistrate Alankar Agnihotri resigned in protest, citing what he described as the unfair impact of the regulations on upper-caste Brahmin students. In Noida, BJP Yuva Morcha vice-president Raju Pandit also resigned, calling the rules discriminatory.
