Congress state president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring’s nuanced stand on a CBI probe into a government employee’s suicide triggered sharp attacks from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders, exposing rifts within the Opposition ranks.Dr Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, district manager of the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation in Amritsar, ended his life by consuming poison early on March 21. In a video message recorded before his death, he blamed former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar for sustained harassment, threats and pressure linked to tender allotments.Facing the ire of the BJP and SAD, Warring rushed to clarify that he was not opposing a CBI inquiry but insisted that any investigation — by central agencies or otherwise — must be conducted under the supervision of a sitting HC or SC judge. “The track record of central agencies like CBI and ED is questionable as they have become a tool in the hands of the BJP-led government,” he said.Warring also questioned the BJP: “Who is stopping your government at the Centre from ordering a CBI inquiry?” He clarified that he stood by his party MPs who had written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding a CBI probe, but he himself did not sign the letter as he was in Khatkar Kalan attending Shaheed Bhagat Singh martyrdom day celebrations. The remarks drew immediate fire, with BJP’s state president Sunil Jakhar and SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal accusing Warring of being “in cahoots” with the Bhagwant Mann-led government.Jakhar claimed Congress MPs Dharamvira Gandhi, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Charanjit Singh Channi and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa had only made verbal demands and not submitted a formal written request. Channi, however, said Shah had already marked their representation to the official concerned.Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa assertedthat the Congress remained united in its pursuit of justice. “Our MPs raised the demand for a CBI inquiry before the Union Home Minister in Parliament — the constitutional route,” Bajwa said.
