The Punjab Government has introduced a new reward policy aimed at encouraging the public to provide information leading to the arrest of gangsters and wanted criminals. Under ‘Reward Policy of the State of Punjab for the Arrest of Wanted Criminals’, members of the public can earn rewards of up to Rs 2 lakh or more for providing credible information. The policy empowers field officers to sanction cash rewards to informers and police personnel who carry out exceptional operations. The reward amount will be decided based on the gravity of the offence, the risk taken by the informer, and the quality of information provided. To ensure transparency, the policy requires the immediate supervisory officer to submit a reasoned recommendation certifying the credibility of the information and the specific roles played. The identity of informers will be protected at all stages. The policy is part of the ongoing ‘Gangstran Te Vaar’ campaign aimed at making Punjab gangster-free. DGP Gaurav Yadav stated that the policy is designed to motivate informers and institutionalise a transparent mechanism for granting rewards.
