The Brick Kiln Owners Associations from Fatehgarh Sahib, Khanna, Samrala and Payal in a meeting held on Tuesday deliberated on the challenges faced by the industry. They urged the Union and state governments to take immediate steps to stabilise the supply and prices of coal. They said that due to the black marketing of the coal it has become impossible to run the brick kilns and warned of a spike in construction costs as the sector was fast becoming economically unviable due to soaring input costs.Association president Prem Jindal and secretary Narinder Bansal said that the kiln owners were grappling with mounting losses as coal prices continued to rise unchecked. “If the government fails to intervene in time, the brick kiln industry could face a severe crisis,” they cautioned.Highlighting the direct link between coal prices and brick rates, the leaders warned that any further increase in fuel cost would impact construction expenses.
