R Madhavan has expressed disappointment with Hollywood, stating he did not enjoy Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ and feels that the West has “lost the plot.” While promoting his new film ‘Hisaab Barabar’, he shared his views on the current state of filmmaking in Hollywood, emphasising a shift away from compelling storytelling.Talking to The Hindu, he stated that he hates to say it so bluntly, but he feels that Hollywood has lost its way in recent years. Madhavan reflected on older films like ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘A Beautiful Mind’, which left a lasting impact on audiences, noting that no recent movies have had the same effect on him. He appreciated the original Joker as a passionate project but did not see the merit in the sequel.He highlighted the film’s failure to address the profound impact of the atomic bomb created by its main character. Madhavan pointed out that the bomb killed more people than any event in history and destroyed cultures for years. He emphasized the importance of showing how this affected the man who invented it, stating, “For me, that was really important.”Madhavan expressed a desire to understand how ‘Oppenheimer’ felt the morning he learned about the devastation caused by the atomic bomb. He questioned whether ‘Oppenheimer’ would pick up his newspaper and be viewed as a villain by his neighbors or if he would feel happy or monstrous. He noted that these emotional aspects were not addressed in the film, suggesting that Hollywood might struggle with portraying deep emotions. He further explained that it would be like making a film about Gandhi while skipping over how he achieved India’s freedom.
