After being removed as the Deputy Leader of AAP in the Rajya Sabha and accusing his own party of trying to muzzle his voice, Raghav Chadha received a sharp rebuke from Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who said Chadha was “compromised”.Once the blue-eyed boy of AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal, Chadha today found himself abandoned by his party and its leaders, who questioned his unwillingness to toe the party line in Parliament and his “growing proximity” to the BJP.Mann, when asked about Chadha’s claims that he had done no wrong, said his political affiliations “were under a cloud”.“He did not raise important issues in Parliament where the party had taken a certain political line. Instead, he was speaking about overpriced samosas at airports and delivery of pizzas. He was unwilling to sign a petition against the deletion of votes of citizens and the creation of fake votes, speak against the Gujarat Government for booking 160 AAP workers, speak on attempts to create a religious divide in Punjab or other issues concerning the state, including release of GST and RDF dues or the BJP not fulfilling its promise to farmers on a legal guarantee for MSP on all crops. If someone doesn’t toe the party line, it is against the party whip and action will be taken,” said the CM.Mann earlier said parties often change their leaders in Parliament as part of their strategy to ensure that voices were raised in line with the party’s position. “Between 2014 and 2019, Dr Dharamvir Gandhi was initially the leader of the party’s parliamentary board and later I became the leader. When we sit in Opposition, certain decisions are taken jointly by all Opposition parties, including decisions to walk out on certain issues, which Chadha did not follow,” he said.Party sources say all eyes are now on the Parliamentary Affairs Committee (PAC), which is due to meet shortly, where further discussions on Chadha could take place. The developments related to the Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, including strong reactions from party leaders, signal a snapping of ties between Chadha and AAP, a party he joined at its inception. For some time, there had been “discomfort” within AAP ranks over his perceived proximity to the BJP and concerns that he could be used by the Centre’s ruling party in the Punjab elections.Chadha was largely credited with AAP’s success in the 2022 Punjab elections, when the party won 92 of 117 seats. His influence in the government remained strong until the end of 2023. However, his sudden absence from the political scene in the run-up to the Delhi polls and during party supremo Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest in the Delhi liquor case (from which Kejriwal has since been discharged) did not go down well with the party leadership.Chadha had said he was in the UK for treatment of an eye ailment. Though he returned after a few months, he had apparently lost the trust of the leadership and was largely on his own. Even after Kejriwal was discharged last month, party sources say Chadha did not issue a statement in his support. The man who once resided in the plush House No. 50 in Sector 2, Chandigarh, where ministers, MLAs, party leaders, police and civil officers and businessmen would queue up to meet him, was also asked to vacate the house last year. The residence falls under the CM quota and is designated as the CM’s camp office.
