NEW DELHI: Rajasthan assembly witnessed chaos on Friday after BJP MLA Gopal Sharma referred to Congress MLA Rafiq Khan as a “Pakistani.”The uproar began during a debate on urban development and hosing (UDH) grant demands when Khan criticised Sharma’s speech and his allegations against senior Congress leaders. As Khan compared urban development efforts under Congress and BJP rule, Sharma interrupted, repeatedly calling him “Pakistani,” leading to strong objections from Congress MLAs. Assembly chairperson Sandeep Sharma intervened, urging members to restore order.Amid the heated exchange, Khan mocked Sharma’s behaviour, triggering further confrontation. Sharma also made remarks about Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, later retracting them after the Chairperson reminded him that non-members cannot be named. He continued to make allegations against deceased Congress leaders, later offering another apology. The tensions escalated when Khan responded to these statements, leading to further disruption in the House.Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has earlier observed that calling someone “Miyan-Tiyan” or “Pakistani” may be inappropriate but does not amount to an offense of hurting religious sentiments. A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Satish Chandra Sharma made this remark while closing a case against a man accused of referring to a government servant as “Pakistani.”
