With the state government expected to announce a substantial package for women in the forthcoming Budget on International Women’s Day, girl students of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) are hoping that their long-pending demand for an additional hostel will finally find a place in the financial outlay.Over the past few years, there has been a sharp rise in enrolment at the institute. At present, the varsity has hostel facilities to accommodate only 500 girls against 600 enrolments. For the last few years, varsity authorities have been seeking government approval for an additional hostel to house at least 100 more students, but the proposal awaits clearance.Due to the paucity of space, some students are sharing the rooms, while senior students are opting for paying guest accommodation.Located nearly 10 km from Patiala city, the campus is situated in a relatively isolated area with limited public transport facilities. A student living in a PG said, “It gets extremely foggy in the winters and there is always a fear of accidents. If more hostel rooms are provided, it will not only reduce travel time but also ensure our safety.”Vice-Chancellor Jaishankar Singh said a representation had been sent to the state seeking an increase in hostel capacity for girls.Attempts to reach Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains elicited no response.
