As Assam gears up for its upcoming Assembly elections, a political storm has erupted with the Congress levelling serious allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife Rinki Bhuyan Sarma, accusing her of holding multiple passports and demanding a thorough investigation into the matter. The ruling BJP leader, however, has strongly denied the charges, calling them “baseless” and “politically motivated”, and has threatened legal action against the Congress.Addressing a press conference at the AICC office here, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera alleged that Rinki holds three foreign passports, raising serious questions about her citizenship under Indian law, which forbids dual nationality.Showing the alleged passports, he claimed that they were issued by the UAE, Antigua and Barbuda, and Egypt, calling the matter a “crime” and demanding an immediate and thorough investigation.Khera also alleged that the Chief Minister’s wife owns properties in Dubai and has links to a Wyoming-based company in the US. According to him, the company, allegedly involving Sarma, his wife and their son, has significant financial interests, including plans to invest in the hospitality sector. He further raised concerns about an alleged Rs 52,000 crore linked to the family and called for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. The Congress also sought a response from Home Minister Amit Shah, questioning whether he was aware of the alleged foreign assets and whether an investigation would be initiated. The grand old party’s attack comes amid heightened political activity in the state, with elections drawing closer.Dismissing the allegations, Sarma accused the Congress of indulging in “desperate tactics” ahead of the polls. “I categorically reject every allegation made by Khera. These are malicious, fabricated and politically motivated lies aimed at misleading the people of Assam,” he said in a post on X.The Chief Minister also announced that he and his wife would file both criminal and civil defamation cases against Khera within 48 hours. Expressing confidence in the judicial process, Sarma said the truth would emerge in court and that those making defamatory statements would be held accountable.“The people of Assam will not be misled by such propaganda. We remain focused, determined and confident of securing a decisive mandate of more than 100 seats,” he added.
