Sikh organisations, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) and the Dal Khalsa, have sought the reopening of the border with Pakistan to resume trade via the Wagah-Attari border. They have also announced plans to hold a rally at Attari on March 28 to demand the resumption of cross-border trade.Former MP Simranjit Singh Mann made this announcement while addressing mediapersons here on Friday. He was flanked by Emaan Singh Mann and Kanwar Pal Singh.Favouring measures to facilitate free trade and the unrestricted movement of people between India and Pakistan, he said Sikh organisations have framed this demand within a broader political framework.Simranjit Singh Mann opined that such a measure would boost regional prosperity, improve access to markets in the neighbouring country for Punjab’s farmers and traders and alleviate economic distress in the state.Emaan Singh Mann said the Indian Army frequently claims that Operation Sindoor was not over but merely paused. In this context, he added, the opening of the Attari-Wagah border has become more significant to avoid further escalation and to bring lasting peace to the region.Kanwar Pal Singh said that for many years, there have been military stand-offs and skirmishes between India and Pakistan, leading to frequent closures and restrictions at the Attari-Wagah border, including the stoppage of trade and pilgrims’ visits to historic gurdwaras across the Radcliffe Line.He added that even the Kartarpur Corridor has not been functioning since India and Pakistan engaged in a brief period of limited conflict last year.
