Amid the uproar over purchase of 10 vehicles (Mahindra Scorpio) for chairmen of Agricultural Produce and Marketing Committees (APMC), three vehicles have been delivered to APMC Shimla, APMC Kullu and APMC Mandi.Also read: Purchase of SUVs for APMC chiefs in Himachal sparks statewide outrageThe remaining APMCs are likely to get the vehicles shortly.Incidentally, the SUV that was headed to APMC Chamba met with an accident on Wednesday before it could reach its destination.“The vehicle collided with another car before it could reach Chamba. It has been sent for repair,” said an APMC official from Chamba.Meanwhile, people are questioning the decision on social media to purchase SUVs for APMC chairmen when the state is going through an unprecedented financial crisis.The farmers and growers also quite upset that the money meant to be used for their welfare had been splurged on buying vehicles for the political appointees.Himachal Pradesh State Agricultural Marketing Board and APMCs have paid the money for the vehicles. These bodies earn money through marketing fee imposed on the sale of agricultural and horticultural produce in the mandis.Defending the decision, an APMC chairman said the proposal to purchase the SUVs was taken a couple of months back, when the financial situation in the state didn’t look as grim as it is now.“Unfortunately, these vehicles arrived after Revenue Deficit Grant was discontinued and the financial scenario suddenly turned extremely grim,” he said.
