As India prepares to host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup along with Sri Lanka, a team of ICC officials brought the World Cup trophy to Delhi Public School, Amritsar, the alma mater of dynamic left-handed batsman Abhishek Sharma. The occasion was a moment of pride for the school as it hosted the glittering trophy and extended its best wishes to its most celebrated alumnus ahead of the global tournament.Ahead of the Men’s T20 World Cup, the ICC launched a special trophy tour covering the alma maters of players in the Indian T20 World Cup squad. The tour has included cities such as Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Chennai, Patna, Delhi, Nadiad, Kanpur, Aligarh, Mohali and Amritsar.Young cricket enthusiasts in the city got an opportunity to click photographs with the trophy and briefly interact with Abhishek through an online video message, in which he thanked everyone for their love and support.Abhishek, fondly called “Abhi” by his teachers at DPS, said Amritsar would always remain close to his heart, wherever he plays. He was joined by his parents, who expressed hope that he would break several records in the prestigious tournament.Principal Kamal Chand said the trophy symbolised not only global sporting excellence but also courage, discipline and belief — values that DPS Amritsar strives to instil in every student.Members of the school management, Aakash Khandelwal and Ajay Maheshwari, highlighted the vital role of sports in shaping character, fostering resilience and nurturing a strong sense of national pride among young learners.During the live video interaction, Abhishek candidly shared his experiences, struggles and aspirations, which deeply resonated with the students.Former cricketer and city-based sportsperson Sukhpreet Singh Twinkle, who played alongside Abhishek during their Under-16 and Under-19 days, said a strong foundation and core values had kept Abhishek grounded despite his rapid rise to fame. He added that Abhishek remained an inspiration for young aspirants and a symbol of perseverance for budding sportspersons from Amritsar.
