Gurugram-based web developer Himanshu Jangra has been terminated from his job at Starvik Design following a viral video clip from a stand-up comedy show that ignited widespread outrage across social media.During a crowd-work segment at a performance by comedian Pranit More, the 23-year-old claimed that because he spent Rs 370 on a plate of chicken biryani for a date, he felt “entitled” to a return on his investment. The remarks, which included details about pressuring the woman to accompany him to a “dark” park despite her repeated reluctance, drew immediate and intense condemnation for promoting a disturbing sense of entitlement and disregard for consent. In a swift response to the escalating controversy, Vivek Vishwakarma, the founder of Starvik Design, confirmed that the firm had parted ways with Jangra. While noting that an internal review found no prior complaints against the employee in the workplace, Vishwakarma emphasised that the offensive nature of the comments necessitated action.”What happened outside the workplace has now affected the workplace, and I have a responsibility towards the company, our team, and the environment we create here,” Vishwakarma stated in a video message. The incident has since triggered a broader national conversation regarding the prevalence of misogynistic attitudes in dating culture, with critics also calling out the comedian Pranit More for initially laughing at the remarks rather than challenging them—a lapse for which More has since issued an apology.
