US President Donald Trump has announced that India’s energy giant Reliance Industries will back the construction of a massive oil refinery in Texas, describing the project as a “historic $300-billion deal” and the first new refinery to be built in the United States in nearly half a century. The proposed refinery will come up at the Port of Brownsville in the US state of Texas and will be developed by company America First Refining with investment support from Reliance, Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.“Today, I am proud to announce that America First Refining is opening the first new US oil refinery in 50 years in Brownsville, Texas. This is a historic $300 billion deal — the biggest in US history,” Trump said, thanking “partners in India and their largest privately held energy company, Reliance, for this tremendous investment”.According to the US President, the refinery is expected to strengthen American energy production, fuel domestic markets and generate thousands of jobs in South Texas. Trump said the project would also boost US energy exports and contribute billions of dollars in economic activity.Praises India’s role in oil market stabilityThe US on Wednesday acknowledged India’s role in helping maintain stability in global oil markets, even as New Delhi continues to purchase crude oil from Russia. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said, “India has been a great partner in ensuring that oil prices remain stable globally”, underlining the importance of cooperation between the two countries in managing energy markets. The facility is expected to process American shale oil and will be the first new refinery built in the US in nearly 50 years — a milestone the White House has linked to efforts to revive domestic energy infrastructure.Industry reports indicate that the project is planned at the Port of Brownsville, a key Gulf Coast shipping hub, and construction could begin as early as the second quarter of 2026.Trump said the refinery would also incorporate advanced environmental standards and described it as “the cleanest refinery in the world”.While the US President credited his administration’s “America First” economic policies for attracting major investments into the energy sector, Reliance Industries has not yet issued an official statement confirming its financial commitment to the project.Energy analysts note that the partnership highlights the growing strategic role of Indian companies in global refining and energy markets. Reliance already operates the world’s largest refining complex in Jamnagar, India, and is among the largest private sector energy companies globally. The announcement comes at a time of renewed focus on global energy security and supply chains, with Washington seeking to expand domestic refining capacity while strengthening economic partnerships with key allies such as India.
