Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk is set to return to Leh on Sunday, nearly six months after being detained under the National Security Act (NSA) in September last year.In a video message released after his recent interaction with the media in New Delhi, Wangchuk confirmed that he would be returning to Ladakh on Sunday. He had been lodged in a jail in Jodhpur following violence that erupted during demonstrations in Leh in September last year. The unrest resulted in the deaths of four persons and left nearly 100 others injured.Last week, ahead of a hearing in the Supreme Court, the Union Government announced the revocation of Wangchuk’s detention with immediate effect.Preparations are underway in Leh to welcome the activist. The Leh Apex Body (LAB) has planned a reception in his honour. During a meeting held on Friday, LAB leaders decided to organise a public welcome at the NDS Stadium in Leh.LAB co-chairman Cherring Dorjay Lakruk said that leaders would receive Wangchuk upon his arrival on Sunday morning. He is also scheduled to meet the families of those who lost their lives during last year’s violence.Leaders from Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have welcomed Wangchuk’s release. Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena described the revocation of his detention as a “positive step” towards fostering peace, stability, and mutual trust in the region, while emphasising that there is no place for agitation or violence.Following last year’s unrest, the Union Home Ministry had alleged that the protests were incited by Wangchuk through provocative statements. It also stated that despite appeals from several leaders to call off his hunger strike, he continued and made references to movements such as the Arab Spring and Gen Z protests in Nepal.Even after his release, protest demonstrations continued earlier this week, with hundreds participating in rallies across Leh and Kargil districts. The protests were organised following calls by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA).
