The Election Commission of India (ECI) has seized items worth Rs 650 crore since announcing the Assembly election schedules for West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and the Union Territory of Puducherry on March 15. Notably, 50 per cent of these, or around Rs 319 crore, came from West Bengal alone.The EC data shows that of the Rs 651 crore in total seizures between March 15 and April 5, West Bengal accounted for Rs 319 crore.Tamil Nadu ranked second with Rs 170 crore, followed by Assam (Rs 97 crore), Kerala (Rs 58 crore) and Puducherry (Rs 7 crore).West Bengal led in liquor seizures by volume, with 21.29 lakh litres confiscated, dwarfing Assam’s 6.84 lakh litres. Tamil Nadu (74,029 litres) and Kerala (64,862 litres) trailed far behind. West Bengal topped in terms of freebies seized, which were valued at Rs 150 crore, while Tamil Nadu stood a distant second with only Rs 63 crore worth of freebies seized. From Assam, only Rs 13 crore of freebies were seized.In drugs, Tamil Nadu edged West Bengal to the second spot with Rs 67 crore worth of drugs seized from the southern state, while West Bengal recorded drug seizure worth Rs 65 crore. Assam with Rs 56 crore and Kerala with Rs 41 crore worth of drugs seizures, stood at third and fourth spots respectively.In precious metal seizures also West Bengal topped with Rs 39 crore worth of commodity seized, while Tamil Nadu, Assam and Kerala were distantly placed with value of precious metal seizures worth just Rs 8 crore, Rs 4 crore and Rs 1 crore respectively.Assembly polls are due to be held in Assam and Kerala on April 9 while in Tamil Nadu they will be held on April 23 and in West Bengal polls will take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29 respectively.The results will be declared on May 4.
