Actor Timothy Busfield, known for his U.S. prime-time television roles on The West Wing and Thirtysomething, was indicted on Friday on child sex offense charges, accused of groping a young boy on the set of a television show he was directing and producing. The four-count indictment, returned by a grand jury in New Mexico, came a little more than two weeks after a state court judge described the evidence previously presented by prosecutors as “neutral” and ordered Busfield released from pretrial detention.Busfield, 68, surrendered to authorities last month in Albuquerque after being charged through a criminal complaint. He has consistently maintained his innocence, calling the allegations against him “lies.”According to an affidavit filed with the original complaint, prosecutors alleged that Busfield improperly touched two young cast members—twin boys—while directing the Fox television drama The Cleaning Lady, which was filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico’s largest city. The twins, now 11 years old, told authorities that the alleged incidents occurred over a two-year period when they were aged 7 and 8, during breaks in production, prosecutors said. One of the boys reported multiple instances in which Busfield touched his “private areas” over his clothes, according to the affidavit. His brother also reported being touched but provided fewer details. The grand jury indictment, which supersedes the original complaint, includes four counts of criminal sexual contact with a child, a third-degree felony under New Mexico law. The charges relate to allegations involving only one of the brothers. The indictment does not include a general child abuse charge, which had been part of the earlier complaint. The initial complaint listed two counts of criminal sexual contact, compared with four in the indictment.Busfield, an executive producer of The Cleaning Lady who began directing episodes toward the end of the show’s second season in 2022, denied the allegations in a videotaped statement released prior to his arrest. “I did not do anything to those little boys,” he said.In court last month, defense attorney Christopher Dodd described the boys’ parents as “scam artists” seeking “revenge” after their sons were replaced on the show. Dodd also claimed that both boys initially denied being sexually abused when first questioned by a law enforcement officer. An arraignment, during which Busfield is expected to enter a plea, has been scheduled for February 16, according to Dodd.Busfield is best known for his role as a White House reporter on Jattvibe’s The West Wing (1999-2006) and as an advertising executive on ABC’s 1980s ensemble drama Thirtysomething. He also appeared in the 1989 film Field of Dreams. He is married to actor Melissa Gilbert, a former president of the Screen Actors Guild.
