A ‘WORLD-CLASS’ trainer’s daughter won with her first ever runner – after the horse ridden by her jockey son was backed in from 150-1.
Breeze-up legend Willie Browne – the 80-year-old who still sells horses for millions – saw daughter Tanya land a monumental gamble at Dundalk on Tuesday.
She only trains two horses and it was one of those, three-year-old gelding Lamar Canyon, who sealed a massive plunge with 7lb claimer son Adam Browne-Souza in the saddle.
Lamar Canyon, who used to be trained by Willie, had never come close to winning, being sent off 250-1, 100-1 and 16-1 for his three career starts.
The closest he had ever got to victory was the most recent of those – at the biggest odds – when finishing seventh, five-and-a-quarter lengths behind the winner, in a 6f Dundalk contest last November.
Lamar Canyon was switched to Tanya soon after and bookies initially gave him no chance again for Tuesday’s sprint contest, chalking him up 150s.
But a mountain of cash came for the horse throughout the day and he was sent off 20-1 at the Irish all-weather track on his first time tackling the minimum trip of five furlongs and his first run since being gelded.
Carrying 9st1lb, the least amount of weight of anything in the race, the horse travelled in midfield before making his move.
He hung right in the closing stages but was always doing enough on the far side to hold on under Browne-Souza’s drive.
Tanya was absolutely buzzing afterwards, and said: “First runner, first winner! My son Adam rode him, and Willie Browne is my dad.
