The CBI has arrested two more persons in connection with the NEET (UG) paper-leak case, with the role of several officers of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and other organisations, who had access to the printing press where the papers were printed, coming under the scanner, officials said on Thursday. They added that the CBI was focussing on identifying the source of the leak that has caused massive disappointment to lakhs of aspirants eyeing a seat in undergraduate medical courses. The two persons arrested by the CBI from Maharashtra on Thursday were identified as Dhananjay Lokhanda from Ahilyanagar and Manisha Waghmare, who is a beautician from Pune. The CBI had also detained an ‘Ayurvedic doctor’ from Pune, Omkar Shingote, earlier this week.Shingote and his friend Lokhande were allegedly involved in helping students secure admissions to medical colleges. Lokhande also holds a Bachelor’s of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) degree from Mangaluru; while Wagmare’s husband is a dentist.Initial investigation by the Maharashtra Police suggests that Waghmare connected students to Lokhande after accepting payments. The Nashik city police have also detained a 27-year-old BAMS student, Shubham Khairnar, from his residence in Nashik. He was later arrested by the CBI on Tuesday night.Sources in the Nashik police said that Lokhande allegedly couriered a packet containing the NEET question paper to Khairnar, who is believed to have paid him Rs 10 lakh for it. Then, Khairnar electronically forwarded the question paper to another accused in Gurugram, for which he received Rs 15 lakh. The Rajasthan Police have also tracked down two brothers Dinesh Biwal and Mangilal Biwal. Sources within the Rajasthan Police have said that the duo purchased the guess paper containing 120 questions of the NEET-2026 from a person, identified as Yash Yadav, from Haryana. The CBI has now arrested the two accused. On May 13, the agency arrested five accused, including three from Jaipur, one from Gurugram and one from Nasik. The accused, identified as Shubham Khairnar from Nashik, Mangilal Biwal, Vikas Biwal and Dinesh Biwal from Jaipur, and Yash Yadav from Gurugram were produced before a Delhi court on Thursday. The court granted the CBI seven-day custody of the five accused. It noted that the allegations revealed the role of an “organised gang” involved in leaking and circulating confidential examination papers for monetary gain.Meanwhile, forensic and technical analysis of seized electronic devices like laptop and mobile phones is underway. Notably, over 23 lakh students took the NEET (UG) exam on May 3.It is believed that there would be less chances of paper leak if the examination is taken in the CBT (computer-based test) mode.Officials from the Health Ministry said they had communicated to the NTA three years ago that the NEET UG exam can be conducted in the CBT mode. However, gaps in infrastructure to conduct the exam in one sitting in the CBT mode remain a challenge.(With inputs from PTI)
