Eleven years after a sacrilege incident and subsequent police firing that shook Punjab, the emotive issue is set to return to the political spotlight. Shiromani Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) has announced a major protest march on June 1 in many villages of Faridkot district. The outfit, currently headed by jailed Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, will lead the march from Burj Jawahar Singh Wala to Kotkapura, via Bargari and Behbal Kalan, the locations in Faridkot district that remain potent symbols of this decade-old politico-religious wound. The incidents trace back to June 1, 2015, when a bir of the Guru Granth Sahib was stolen from a gurdwara in Burj Jawahar Singh Wala village. The situation escalated days later when torn pages of the holy scripture were found scattered near a gurdwara in Bargari village, sparking widespread outrage. The resulting mass protests culminated in tragedy in October 2015, when police opened fire on demonstrators at Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan. The police action left two protesters dead and dozens injured, triggering a wave of public anger.Public fury over the sacrilege and the heavy-handed police response severely crippled the then SAD-BJP government. It became a defining campaign issue in subsequent elections, prompting successive governments to promise swift justice. However, despite multiple judicial commissions, Special Investigation Teams (SITs), and ongoing court proceedings, closure remains elusive.According to Daler Singh Doad, district president Akali Dal Waris Punjab De, a congregation of prominent Sikh leaders will gather at Burj Jawahar Singh Wala before the march commences toward Kotkapura. The event is expected to draw high-profile Panthic and political figures, including    Srabjit Singh Khalsa (Faridkot MP),   Tarsem Singh (father of Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh),    Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh (AAP MLA and former SIT chief who led the sacrilege probe and    Manpreet Singh Ayali (SAD MLA), said Doad.A decade later, while the legal battles drag on in various courts, the raw emotional resonance of the 2015 sacrilege remains unhealed—proving that the controversy still holds the power to sway Punjab’s social and political discourse, said Sukhraj Singh Niamiwala, son of one of the deceased in alleged police firing at Behbal Kalan.
