As Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike entered Day 17, it wasn’t just climate activism or the ongoing protest that dominated social media, it was also the return of two beloved ‘3 Idiots’ characters to public conversation. While Omi Vaidya, who played the unforgettable Chatur “Silencer” Ramalingam, made an emotional appeal in support of Wangchuk, many fans were left asking another question: Where is Rancho? Or more specifically, where is Aamir Khan?In an Instagram video, Vaidya referred to Wangchuk by ‘Phunsukh Wangdu’, the fictional genius portrayed by Aamir Khan in Rajkumar Hirani’s 2009 blockbuster and inspired by the real-life Ladakh innovator.”I don’t want Phunsukh Wangdu to die,” Vaidya said, urging people to pay attention to Wangchuk’s campaign.According to updates shared by those associated with the protest, Wangchuk has lost 8.5 kg since beginning his indefinite fast, while his blood pressure was recorded at 109/70.’He’s done some incredible stuff’Recalling his interaction with Wangchuk, Vaidya described him as a humble and inspiring personality.”I’ve met this guy. He’s a pretty interesting character. He has done some incredible stuff in his life and he seems pretty humble, which is kind of fantastic,” he said. The actor urged people to understand the issues Wangchuk is raising rather than dismissing them based on political differences.”Whether you agree with him or not, I don’t really want this guy to die. I think he’s a pretty impressive person and I would like for him to live,” Vaidya added.Fans ask: ‘Where is Rancho?’Vaidya’s message quickly went viral, but much of the online conversation soon shifted to Aamir Khan, who immortalised Rancho/Phunsukh Wangdu on screen.Social media users questioned why the actor has not publicly commented on Wangchuk’s hunger strike despite portraying a character based on his life.Comments on Instagram and X included:”It’s easy to make a drama out of someone’s life, but it’s difficult to stand up for their real life. Where is Aamir Khan today?””He helped you… Now it’s your time to help him.””If you are a real human then go and ask him about his health.”Aamir Khan has not made any public statement on Wangchuk’s ongoing hunger strike, nor has he responded to the social media posts urging him to extend support. Why is Sonam Wangchuk on hunger strike?Wangchuk is participating in a protest led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. The protest began at Jantar Mantar on June 20, with Wangchuk joining on June 28 before starting his indefinite fast. The protesters are also seeking ₹1 crore compensation for the families of students who allegedly died by suicide following alleged examination irregularities.Political support growsThe agitation has received support from leaders across the political spectrum. TMC MP Mahua Moitra has appealed to Wangchuk to end his fast while continuing the movement. An AAP delegation led by former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, along with Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and CPI(M) MP Amra Ram, have also backed the protest. The CJP has announced a peaceful march to Parliament on July 20, coinciding with the start of the Monsoon Session.
