The Constitution Amendment Bill to advance 33% women’s reservation in Lok Sabha and state assemblies was defeated on the floor of the Lower House on Friday after a united opposition voted against the proposal.”Women of India will never forgive you. Be ready to face their wrath when you go out to contest elections. You will not get an escape route,” Union Home Minister Amit Shah said seconds before the Constitution 131st Amendment Bill 2026 fell with 278 votes in its favour and 211 against it.Later, the government did not bring in the Delimitation Bill 2026 and a Bill to bring changes in the structures of UTs with assemblies. There were 489 MPs present and voting. This was less than two-thirds of the special majority needed to pass the Bills.”The Bill has not received the required two-thirds majority to pass,” Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said, giving out the numbers of MPs who voted for and against the Bills.”The Opposition has not backed the historic Bill to support women of the country. You have lost an opportunity. Our campaign to grant women their due will continue and we will continue to fight to give the women of India their rights,” said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju after the Bills failed.Addressing the House earlier, Amit Shah said the Congress had always protested against whatever PM Narendra Modi did.”All INDI alliance members have opposed women’s reservation using a range of ifs and buts. Kintu, parantu, agar magar karke is bill kaa virodh hi kiya hai. First the Congress opposed OBC reservation and now it has opposed women’s reservation,” Shah said. The Home Minister added that this was the fifth time that members of the INDI alliance as we know it today have opposed women’s reservation.”Women will never forget what they have done. When they go for elections they will have to face the wrath of women. When they go out on roads they will not get a way,” said Shah.He dismissed as false the three narratives the opposition spun against the Bills — that the women’s reservation bill that advances the implementation of one-third reservation for women was meant to delay the caste census; that South will lose representation due to the rise in Lok Sabha seats to 850 and that the government was against Muslim reservation.”Caste census is under way and is part of the Census exercise. Anyone who speaks the language of division can never gain power in this country because MPs take the oath of sovereignty of India, not of a particular region or state. Third, the Constitution does not permit religion-based reservation,” Shah said, rejecting the Opposition stand and accusing the Opposition of again standing in the way of women’s political empowerment as “it did for the past three decades”.”Women of India are watching who is the roadblock in their journey,” Shah said after the Congress offered to support the Bills in exchange of two conditions — 50% rise in Lok Sabha and state assembly seats to become part of the Bills and 33% reservation rollout to be delinked from delimitation.
